Sellrain Hut Circuit
Out and About in the Sellraintal
The Sellrain Mountains are located about a half-hour drive from Innsbruck. They are bordered by the Inn Valley to the north, the Ötztal Valley to the west, and the Wipp and Stubai valleys to the east. To the south, the Stubai Alps provide a magnificent backdrop. The Sellrain region includes the towns of Sellrain, Gries, Kühtai, and St. Sigmund. The largest side valley is the Lüsen Valley, which branches off to the south near Gries and includes Juifenau, Narötz, Praxmar, and Lüsens. From St. Sigmund, the road leads over the Kühtai Pass (2,020 m) into the Ötztal.
Particularly charming are the numerous small, quiet side valleys of the Sellrain, which are framed by mountain ranges reaching heights of up to three thousand meters
peaks. A secluded landscape free of ski lifts, cars, and noise—instead, pure nature, silence, and relaxation. This is especially true, of course, in the two protected areas of the Sellrain: the Stubai Alps Quiet Zone and the Kalkkögel Quiet Zone with its distinctive mountain peaks reminiscent of the Dolomites.
The quiet zones were designated in the 1980s to curb the expansion of ski lifts and roads in the Alpine region. This wild natural landscape is home to ibex, chamois, and marmots, among other species. Bears, too—which roam the Tyrolean mountains coming from the south—take advantage of the vast expanse of the terrain. However, you’ll only catch a glimpse of these shy inhabitants of the mountain wilderness with a great deal of patience, keen observational skills, and a good dose of luck!
In Sellrain, mountaineers and hikers venture off the beaten path to secluded peaks or from hut to hut. Clear mountain streams, small lakes, and picturesque terraces adorned with cyclamen, alpine roses, and many other mountain flowers invite hikers to pause, take in the view, or even meditate. The staffed alpine pastures are ideal places to rest. Due to their high elevation, they are primarily home to sheep, which roam the terrain in small groups.
The glaciers and their unmistakable traces—which have shaped the landscape since the last Ice Age—never cease to impress. Their current retreat is clearly visible and serves as a striking testament to global climate change.
